Under ten minutes from most of North Philadelphia. We are at 3115 Germantown Avenue, a block below Allegheny, so the shop sits inside the neighbourhood instead of out on a highway. Auto glass for North Philadelphia drivers

North Philadelphia parks at the kerb and it always has. Very few of these rowhouses came with a driveway, the numbered side streets are one-way with cars down both sides, and the space you take at seven in the evening is the space you keep until morning. Everything else follows from that. A car sits outside through the freeze, the thaw, the August heat and every night in between, and most of the damage we see is found rather than witnessed. Somebody comes out at six to go to work and there is tempered glass in the seat rails.

The second thing that shapes the work is that this is a working part of the city, not a commuter suburb. These cars are used: to job sites, to shifts at the hospital, up and down the Boulevard, over to Jersey and back. They collect miles on patched asphalt and they get loaded and unloaded on the street. We keep the common windshields on the shelf and we do a great deal of side glass, because that is what North Philadelphia actually needs. Call in the morning and there is a good chance you drive away the same afternoon. We are open 7:30 to 4:00 Monday to Friday and closed at the weekend, so a Saturday night break-in means tape until Monday.

Broad Street is the spine and the subway runs under it, so the traffic above ground is buses, trucks and everybody turning. Lehigh Avenue, Allegheny Avenue and Erie Avenue are the three crosstown roads that carry the load east to west, and all three are truck routes with patched surfaces and utility cuts that never quite settle. Germantown Avenue, our street, cuts across the grid on the diagonal, which is why the junctions along it are five-cornered and why drivers coming off it arrive at an angle. Roosevelt Boulevard starts at Broad near Hunting Park and immediately becomes twelve lanes. In between all of that is the rowhouse grid: one-way, parked solid, one moving car wide.

“I had a great experience with this glass replacement company. They were quick & very professional throughout the process, and the pricing was extremely reasonable compared to others I contacted. The work was done efficiently and the quality was top-notch. Highly recommend them for anyone looking for affordable and reliable glass repair or replacement!”

Local Conditions

What cracks glass around North Philadelphia

One: break-ins, and nothing else is close. A rear door window goes in a couple of seconds on a dark block, and tempered glass does not crack, it collapses into thousands of pieces that end up in the door card, the seat rails and the heater vents. Two: stone off the crosstown truck routes. Lehigh, Allegheny and Erie carry loaded trucks all day and something off a tyre at thirty miles an hour will star a windshield without you hearing it. Three: what the road surface does to a chip you already have. Utility cuts, sunken trench patches and old rail seams flex the glass every time you cross them, and a star that would sit still for a year elsewhere runs across the screen here in a month. Four: the winter routine, which is frozen glass, defroster on full and a scraper. That is how a $60 to $130 fill becomes a $250 to $450 job.

FAQ

Auto glass in North Philadelphia — questions, answered

How fast can you replace a smashed side window?

Most side windows are done inside a couple of hours if the glass is in stock, and a lot of North Philadelphia cars use common glass, so it usually is. Ring 215-608-1108 with the year, make, model and which window it is, and we will tell you on the phone whether it is a today job or a tomorrow one. The price is $200 to $500 fitted and it is agreed before the work starts. We vacuum the door cavity, the seat rails and the carpet, because glass left in the door drops out again the next time you use the window.

Do you come out, or does the car have to come to you?

Both. If the car will not move safely, meaning glass across the driver seat, a window that will not stay up, or a windshield you cannot see through, say so when you call and we will bring the van to the block. If it drives, the shop is usually the better answer, because the glass, the tools and the indoor space are all here and nothing about the job depends on the weather.

What are your hours?

7:30 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, Monday to Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday. That matters more than it sounds like it should, because most break-ins happen at night and a Friday or Saturday night one leaves you taped up until Monday morning. If it happens on a weekday, call early. A car dropped at half seven is often finished before lunch.
