Windshield and Auto Glass for Center City Drivers

Four miles up Broad Street, fifteen to twenty minutes outside the peaks. Center City cars are mostly garage cars, and garage cars reach us with expressway damage rather than break-ins: a stone off I-76 in October that becomes a crack in January. Chip fills are $60 to $130 and half an hour, windshields $250 to $450 fitted. The shop is 3115 Germantown Avenue. Call 215-608-1108.

Auto glass for Center City drivers

A Center City car is not a commuting car. It lives in a garage or on a permit block, it goes out at the weekend, and it does the shore run, the trip to family, the drive to the airport. That pattern hides damage. A chip picked up on the Schuylkill Expressway in the autumn is invisible in a dark garage, and the first anybody knows about it is a cold morning months later when there is a line across the glass and the defroster finishes the job.

The second thing worth saying plainly is that the mobile van is often the wrong answer downtown, and we would rather tell you now than turn up and fail. Plenty of Center City garages have a clearance bar the van will not pass, no room to work alongside a car, and management who do not want adhesive work happening on their deck. Where there is a driveway, a courtyard or a permitted space with room around the car, we will come. Where there is not, twenty minutes up Broad Street with the price agreed beforehand is the better plan: $60 to $130 for a chip, $250 to $450 for a fitted windshield, $200 to $500 for side or back glass. Leave the car and the subway brings you back downtown.

The downtown grid is one-way and metered, with garage entrances mid-block and helical ramps built for smaller cars than people now drive. Chestnut, Walnut, Spruce and Pine each run one way, and Broad and Market cross them. The Vine Street Expressway trenches along the northern edge and the Schuylkill Expressway ramps hang off the western side, so a car leaving a Center City garage is on patched concrete within two minutes. East of Fifth Street, Old City and Society Hill keep their block paving and granite kerbs, which is exactly where a downtown driver discovers what a previously stable chip sounds like when it stops being stable. None of that is where the car actually got damaged.

“I had a great experience with this glass replacement company. They were quick & very professional throughout the process, and the pricing was extremely reasonable compared to others I contacted. The work was done efficiently and the quality was top-notch. Highly recommend them for anyone looking for affordable and reliable glass repair or replacement!”

Local Conditions

What cracks glass around Center City

One: expressway miles. Nearly all the damage on a Center City car was collected on I-76, I-676 or a bridge approach, off patched concrete, behind trucks in the right-hand lane, from stone leaving a tyre with the force of a hammer. Two: delay. A car kept in a dark garage hides its chip for months, and every one of those months has a freezing night and a hot defroster in it. Three: garage architecture. Tight ramps, concrete columns and mirrors folded against pillars take out mirror glass and quarter lights, which people assume is body-shop work and is often ours. Four: construction. There is always a site downtown, and grit off a hoarding or a dump truck lands on whatever is parked below and gets ground in by the wipers.

Getting Started

Reaching us from Center City

Broad Street north from City Hall, about four miles, straight. Stay on Broad past Girard and Lehigh to Allegheny Avenue, turn right, and after about half a mile Germantown Avenue crosses on the diagonal; turn onto it and we are at 3115. Fifteen to twenty minutes outside the peaks and longer at five o'clock. If Broad is closed for an event, Ridge Avenue as far as Lehigh Avenue and then Lehigh east to Germantown Avenue does the same job. The Broad Street subway runs the whole way if you are leaving the car with us, with Allegheny station a short walk from the shop. Call 215-608-1108 before you drive up.

FAQ

Auto glass in Center City — questions, answered

Can the van come into my building's garage?

Ask your building first, because that is usually what decides it. Two things stop us: a clearance bar low enough that the van will not fit under it, and a management company that does not permit contractors to do adhesive work on the deck. Even where we are allowed in, we need enough room to stand at the side of the car with a door fully open. If your space is a tight stall between two columns it will not be a good job, and twenty minutes up Broad to an indoor bay is the better answer.

I only drive at weekends and you are shut then.

That is the awkward part and it is worth planning around. We are open 7:30 to 4:00 Monday to Friday and closed Saturday and Sunday, so a Center City car that only moves at the weekend has to come up on a weekday. The usual solution is an early drop: leave it before eight, take the subway back down, and collect in the afternoon. If that is impossible, call 215-608-1108 and we will talk about whether the van can reach where the car actually sits.

How urgent is a crack that is not in my eyeline?

More urgent than it feels. A crack does not stay where it is; it runs from the ends, and it runs fastest when the glass flexes or when the temperature changes quickly, which is a cold garage, a hot defroster and a drop onto Old City block paving. Once it reaches the edge of the screen the glass has lost most of its structural contribution and replacement at $250 to $450 is the only option. While it is still a chip, $60 to $130 and half an hour ends the story.
