Allegheny West is the neighbourhood on the other side of Broad from us, and the road that names it runs almost to our door, so people from these blocks tend to be regulars rather than one-offs. It is rowhouse North Philadelphia: numbered streets running north to south, one-way, cars parked nose to tail on both sides from about five in the evening, and almost nothing in the way of off-street parking. What that produces, over and over, is broken side glass discovered at seven in the morning.
It is also a neighbourhood that hosts other people's cars. The big hospital sits on Broad a little to the north, and the streets around it take the overflow from shifts that end at eleven at night and three in the morning. A car belonging to somebody who is inside working for twelve hours is a car nobody is looking at, and we do a steady trade in rear door windows from exactly those blocks. The good news is the distance. It is a short, flat drive on a road you already use, the price is agreed on the phone before anything starts, and a window dropped off first thing is usually back in your hands the same day. 215-608-1108.
Allegheny Avenue is the main east-west road and a truck route, wide by North Philadelphia standards and patched in long strips where the utilities have been in. Broad Street forms the eastern boundary and carries the buses and everything turning. Twenty-second, Twenty-fifth and Twenty-ninth Streets take the north-south traffic, and Glenwood Avenue cuts across the bottom on the diagonal toward Lehigh. The residential streets in between are narrow one-ways with parking on both sides and about enough width left for one moving car, so drivers pass double-parked vehicles with an inch on the mirror. Vacant lots break the blocks up, which sounds harmless and is not: an open lot means an unlit gap and a car parked next to nothing.
“I had a great experience with this glass replacement company. They were quick & very professional throughout the process, and the pricing was extremely reasonable compared to others I contacted. The work was done efficiently and the quality was top-notch. Highly recommend them for anyone looking for affordable and reliable glass repair or replacement!”
One: overnight break-ins, particularly on the blocks nearest the hospital and around the vacant lots, where there is no lit window facing the street. Rear passenger glass is the usual target. Two: Allegheny Avenue traffic. It is a truck route and the strip patching over old utility trenches throws stone constantly, so most of the windshield chips we fill from this neighbourhood were collected within a mile of home. Three: the squeeze on the numbered streets. Passing a double-parked car with inches to spare is how mirror glass goes and how quarter windows meet a wing mirror coming the other way. Four: heat and cold on a car with no garage. Twelve hours of August sun on a screen followed by a cold night puts every existing chip under stress, and February does the same in reverse.
Allegheny Avenue east, and that is nearly the whole instruction. From anywhere west of Broad, get onto Allegheny and cross Broad Street, carry on about half a mile, and Germantown Avenue cuts across on the diagonal. Turn right onto it and we are a few doors down at 3115. Six to eight minutes outside the school run. If Allegheny is closed, Lehigh Avenue east to Germantown Avenue and then north-west up the Avenue works just as well and adds about three minutes. There is room to hand the car over on the street outside. If the window is out and the car is full of glass, call 215-608-1108 and we will come to the block instead.
James E Linus Sons Inc works across North Philadelphia and the surrounding towns — pick your neighborhood:
No, leave it. Tempered glass breaks into thousands of small pieces that get into the door cavity, the window channel, the seat rails and the heater vents, and sweeping the seat only pushes them further in. We take the door card off and vacuum the cavity properly, because glass left inside drops back down the channel and jams the new window a week later. Bring it as it is. $200 to $500 fitted, usually the same day.
We can come to a block in Allegheny West, yes, and it is a short run for the van. A hospital or institutional car park is a different matter, because some will not allow contractors to work on a deck and adhesive work needs space around the car. The practical version is that you tell us where the car is standing and how long it will be there, and we tell you honestly whether we can do it there or whether the shop is quicker. We work 7:30 to 4:00, Monday to Friday.
$60 to $130, and about half an hour. The variables are how many chips there are, how big they are and whether they sit in your line of sight. What decides whether a repair is possible at all is age: fresh damage with clean edges fills properly, while a break that has had six months of rain, road salt and wiper dirt in it may not. A screen replacement is $250 to $450 fitted, so the maths on getting it done early is not complicated.
Tell us the vehicle and the glass that's damaged — you'll see your price instantly, and we'll hold it for you.
