$60 to $130 and about thirty minutes fills a chip, and on comprehensive cover it is frequently nothing out of pocket. The thing that kills chips on Strawberry Mansion cars is not the road, it is the morning routine: a windshield that has frosted hard under the park trees, hit with a defroster on full or a jug of warm water, will run a star into a crack in seconds. Call 215-608-1108 before winter does that for you.

Glass expands when it warms, and it does not do it evenly. Put hot air or warm water on the inside of a frozen windshield and the inner face of the laminate grows while the outer face is still at freezing, and the pane carries that stress across its whole width. Where there is a chip, all of that stress concentrates at the tip of a leg, which is exactly where a crack wants to start. This is the most common way a small, cheap, repairable piece of damage turns into a $250 to $450 windshield, and it happens in a driveway rather than on a road.
The repair removes the weak point before winter can use it. The crater is cleaned out, the air trapped under the surface is drawn off under vacuum, and clear resin is injected under pressure until it fills the legs of the star, then cured hard with ultraviolet light and polished flush. The pane is structurally whole again and you can drive off immediately, with no cure time to wait out. What you cannot expect is invisibility. A filled chip leaves a faint mark you have to hunt for in raking light, and any shop promising it will vanish is telling you what you want to hear rather than what happens.
“Excellent job and great professional service. Dropped my car off 8am and it was done within two hours. Pricing for my window replacement was the most reasonable in the city of Philadelphia. Highly recommend.”

Strawberry Mansion cars frost harder and later than cars a mile east, and that is worth planning around if you have a chip. The park side of the neighborhood sits in shade for much of a winter morning, so a windshield here can still be iced at nine when open blocks cleared at half seven, and drivers reach for stronger measures accordingly. Warm water is the worst of them, followed closely by a defroster turned straight to maximum. If you have a chip and cannot get it filled yet, run the defroster on low for five minutes before touching the glass and scrape rather than pour. Then bring it down Lehigh Avenue, because thirty minutes now is the whole difference.

It is one of the few genuinely reliable ways to break a windshield, and the risk is much higher on glass that already has a chip. The problem is the speed of the temperature change: one face of the laminate expands sharply while the other is still frozen, and the pane has to absorb that difference. Undamaged glass usually survives it. Glass with a star in it very often does not, because the stress finds the tip of a leg and runs. Cold-scrape it, or use the defroster on a low setting and give it time.
Sometimes, and it depends on three things: length, position and age. Short cracks in the field of the glass, roughly under six inches, can often be filled successfully if they are reasonably fresh and clean. What rules it out is a crack that has reached the bonded outer edge of the pane, one crossing the driver's primary sightline, or one that has been open long enough for grime and wax to work down inside it so the resin cannot bond. Describe where it starts and where it ends on the phone and you will get an honest answer.
